Key benefits of Level 2 charging

INTRO: As battery is the lifeline of an electric vehicle, it is essential to know and understand its charging process. Level 2 charging – using a 240-volt electric supply – provides plenty of benefits to an EV owner. These include faster charging, convenience, cost-effectiveness, and improved battery life.  But besides Level 2 charging, many other factors must be taken into account to keep the EV battery healthy.

With a Level 2 charger, you can charge your EV overnight, which means it will be fully charged and ready to go in the morning

The battery life is improved because Level 2 charging typically uses a higher voltage and amperage than Level 1 charging, which results in a more efficient and gentle charging process

Level 2 charging refers to the charging of an electric vehicle using a 240-volt AC electrical supply as against Level 1 charging, which is done with a standard 120-volt outlet. The following are some key benefits of Level 2 charging:

  1. Faster: Level 2 charging can charge an EV battery much faster than Level 1 charging. Level 2 chargers can provide up to 30 miles of range per hour of charging, whereas Level 1 chargers can provide only 4-5 miles of range.
  2. Convenient: Level 2 charging can be done at home or workplace, making it more convenient. With a Level 2 charger, you can charge your EV overnight, which means it will be fully charged and ready to go in the morning.
  3. Accessibility: Level 2 charging stations are becoming more common, making it easier to find a charging station when you’re on the go. Many public charging stations offer Level 2 charging, and some employers are installing Level 2 charging stations in the parking lots of workplaces.
  4. Cost-effective: Level 2 charging is more cost-effective than Level 1 charging in the long run. The faster charging time means that you can charge your EV more efficiently and save on electricity costs.
  5. Battery life: Charging your EV with Level 2 charging may help extend the life of your battery. When charging at a higher voltage, the battery heats up less, which can reduce wear and tear on the battery over time.

The battery life is improved because Level 2 charging typically uses a higher voltage and amperage than Level 1 charging, which results in a more efficient and gentle charging process. When an EV is charged, it generates heat, and excessive heat can lead to battery degradation and reduce the battery life. Level 2 charging can help mitigate this problem by reducing the time it takes to charge the battery.

Furthermore, Level 2 chargers can provide more consistent and stable charging currents compared to Level 1 chargers. This can help prevent overcharging and undercharging, which also contribute to battery degradation and shorten the battery life.

However, it is important to note that charging with a Level 2 charger alone may not necessarily improve battery life if other factors such as temperature management and charging frequency are not taken into account.
