Charging etiquettes at public EV chargers

INTRO: As more and more people switch to electric vehicles, the demand for public EV charging stations also grows. While these charging stations provide an important service for EV drivers, it’s important to follow proper charging etiquettes to ensure that everyone gets a fair and efficient charging experience. By following a few simple guidelines, one can ensure this.

If you are not actively charging your vehicle, it’s advisable to avoid parking in charging spots. These are meant for charging only, and parking there can hamper others from accessing the charger

The rise in number of EVs on roads has, logically, led to the increase in demand for public charging stations. Since the public charging infra in most places is still inadequate, EV users need to follow a few tips to ensure that everyone gets a wholesome experience. Some of these are:

  1. Be mindful of time: While using a public EV charger, be conscious of others in wait and limit your charging time to what is essential to top up your battery. Move your vehicle as soon as it’s fully charged.
  2. Avoid parking, if not charging: If you are not actively charging your vehicle, it’s advisable to avoid parking in charging spots. These are meant for charging only, and parking there can hamper others from accessing the charger.
  3. Wait for your turn: If a vehicle is getting actively charged, do not unplug it randomly to charge yours. Be patient, wait for your turn.
  4. Be considerate: Avoid blocking access to chargers. If there are multiple charging spots available, try to choose one that doesn’t block others from accessing the charger.
  5. Be aware of rules: Different charging stations have different rules, such as whether it’s acceptable to leave your vehicle unattended while charging. Be aware of all these rules and follow them strictly.
